Narmer c. 3000 BC
Narmer is often counted as the first king of a united Egypt. The Narmer Palette shows him wearing the white crown of the south on one side and the red crown of the north on the other. His name was written in a serekh, a palace-façade frame topped by the Horus falcon: the cartouche had not been invented yet.
Kings this early did not use a cartouche yet: the oval around the royal name appears in the 4th Dynasty. See Sneferu's, one of the first →
Names of gods (Ra, Amun, Ptah) are written first out of respect, even when they are read later. Dates are approximate; we follow Ian Shaw (ed.), The Oxford History of Ancient Egypt (2000).
